Scratch art is created by manipulating values. You create hundreds of tiny scratches to define your image. On the small piece of scratch board play with textures/scratch marks. Try to make each mark have a nice range of values in it.

Find a good reference photo to draw from. It should have an interesting texture and good range of values.
Draw it out in pencil first!
Fill the board and go to town experimenting.

You need to create a final scratch art composition that fills the whole 8"x10" area.
This is all about line quality, textures and values.

What I love about the above piece: All the different parts of the burger have various directions that the scratch marks go. Look at the lettuce. The line work follows the contours. The burger is created by a cross-hatching technique. Every item was treated differently to create the various textures.
